My Process
Before any work commences, a non-returnable deposit of 50% of the labour charge is payable (usually at step 3 below). 100% of the cost of materials (patterns, fabrics, thread, zips etc.) required must be paid for in advance. However, any/all of these can be supplied by yourself if preferred. The remaining balance is payable upon completion and collection or delivery of the finished outfit. Personal consultations (by appointment only) are normally available weekdays between 10am - 2pm, Saturdays between 11am-4pm and some evenings. I try to be flexible, so don't be afraid to ask. 1. Enquiry - via phone or email to establish the basic requirement. 2. Initial no obligation consultation - (approx. 1 hour) I am quite used to unusual requests and really enjoy a challenge. Please feel free to use your imagination to enable me to bring your ideas to life and create your perfect outfit. 3. Start of project For close fitting garments it is essential to wear (or bring along) your actual underwear with you for all appointments. For floor length garments, you will need shoes with the correct height heel. Please bring along any sewing pattern information you may have already found (or www.sewingpatterns.com is a good place to start) plus images or sketches of the garment style you are looking for. I can suggest fashion fabric suppliers and help you source the additional zips, thread etc. Alternatively, I can supply these extras once you have found and chosen your fabric/s. The relevant measurements will be taken and your ideas discussed at this point. |

Toile fitting - (under 1 hour) During your first fitting any adjustments can be made to ensure a perfect fit. 5a. If the toile is altered significantly, a further fitting will be required - (1/2 hour, 1 week later).
6. After approval of the final toile fitting, work will commence on the actual garment. As mentioned above the construction will take longer if the design is more complicated - (2 weeks +). 7. Garment fittings - (1/2 hour each) One or more garment fittings may be required, for hems and sleeve length etc. 8. Final collection or delivery of the finish outfit, at least 1 week before the required by date. Communication is really important to ensure you are happy at each stage of the process. If you should change your mind about more than a few minor details once the process has begun, it may be necessary to renegotiate the fee. Please bear in mind that if your weight fluctuates (for example, if you are dieting or planning for or have just had a baby) this will have a dramatic effect on the process. The garment will be made based on the measurements taken at the first consultation. An additional charge may be made for adjustments required further along the process. My studio is small but if you want to bring along a "friend" for moral support, please notify me in advance so I can accommodate them too. I am afraid it is not a particularly child friendly environment, so unless the fitting is for them, please arrange for suitable childcare. |
The process of creating a made-to-measure garment can take between 6 weeks to 6 months depending on how elaborate the design is. The procedure below describes a typical project and the timescales quoted are for guidance only (scroll down to see all steps of the process). I aim to have the garments completed at least a week before the `required by’ date to allow for any last minute adjustments.
